1. 写一封给地震灾区捐款的倡议书
Donation to disaster area
June 2nd, 2008
Dear Classmates,
We were shocked at the news released by Xinhua News Agency that an earthquake measuring 8.0 Richter scale hit Wenchuan County of Sichuan Province at 2:28 p.m. This strong earthquake claimed the lives of thousands upon thousands of local people and resulted in the great economic losses in the quake-hit areas.
The Chinese government has taken very rapid actions right after the earthquake hit. President Hu Jintao gave important instructions immediately and Premier Wen Jiabao rushed to the disaster scene in the very afternoon to direct the earthquake-relief campaign. Now, Sichuan Province is desperately in need of your help! Everyday we see on TV or read about in newspaper the urgent situations in Sichuan, and it is time for us to lend a helping hand to those people, especially children in the quake-hit areas.
Now, you can turn your sympathy into concrete assistance through this worldwide fund-raising campaign, which aims at relieving the sufferings of the local people. As college students, we should take the lead in donation campaign and carry out the good Chinese tradition of “Wherever there is affliction appear saviors in every direction” and we also strongly believe what President Hu Jintao said, “Brave Chinese people will never be scared of any difficulties!” Now, the people in quake-hit areas need your support in various forms. Owing to the traffic blockage, money donations are preferred. Whoever wishes to donate to the needy is requested to send his or her donation to the office of Students’ Union within 3 days. If you have any enquiries, please feel free to contact the student union or give us a call at 123456.

2.写一封去灾区做志愿者的申请书。
A letter to be a volunteer in the quake-hit areas of Sichuan Province
To whom in may concern,
My name is Li Ming and I am a senior student of X Normal University, majoring in psychology teaching and research. I am writing this letter to apply for a position of being a volunteer in quake-hit areas because I was deeply moved and touched by what the volunteers have done there.
The qualifications for my application to be a volunteer can be listed as follows: to begin with, I am a student in the department of psychology, which makes me a right candidate to work in the fields of psychological intervention. With good educational background and professional skills, I am sure I can do something for the people there and what I can do is just what the people there are badly in need of. I hope what I do can help them to get through the current difficult situation. Besides, as a student of normal university, I also can be a teacher in the quake-hit areas. According to the reports of news media, the teachers, especially primary and junior and senior middle school teachers are badly needed in the quake-stricken areas. Based on the two points mentioned above, I am confident that I will the right applicant for volunteers. I really hope that you can grant me this chance to realize my self-value.
Thank you for reading my application letter again and I am looking forward to your reply at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely yours
Li Ming
3. The mutual help and cooperation
The mutual help and cooperation are of great value to us. To begin with, mutual help is badly needed in our social life. As social beings, people depend on each other in our life, work and study. As an average individual, each person has both shortcomings and merits. Only by way of mutual assistance can we overcome our shortcomings and realize our self-value and dream.
What’s more, cooperation is essential in our social work and the building of the harmonious society. With the rapid development of science and economy, people are increasingly feeling the power of mutual help and cooperation. The construction of a bridge, a building, a dam, a spacecraft and other projects can not be achieved without the joint efforts and individual sacrifice. In short, we need to realize that neither our society nor our personal life can be separated from cooperation.
In my view, some necessary measures must be taken to make people realize “United, we stand, divided, we fall.” First of all, an education campaign should be launched to educate people on the importance of mutual help and cooperation. In addition, more relevant activities should be organized for young people to cultivate the sense of mutual help and cooperation. Only in these ways can we build up a society full of harmony.

4. White Pollution
Nowadays, white pollution has become one of the biggest problems that we are facing today, especially in the big cities. Today, wherever you are, you can see the plastic bags in various forms. Besides, it is estimated that plastic products, including bags, comprise three to five percent of China’s daily waste.
While providing convenience to consumers, the plastic bags have also caused some problems. To begin with, the excessive use of plastic bags has resulted in the serious pollution, which will have a negative effect on the natural environment. Besides, it also leads to the serious waste of energy and resources because of excessive use and inadequate recycling. Especially ultra-thin plastic shopping bags, which are easily damaged, are often discarded, becoming the main source of “white pollution”
Therefore, for the sake of our future, some measures must be taken to cope with this problem. On the one hand, the production of ultra-thin plastic bags should be banned in China. To ban the production and use of the poorest quality bags is one of the government’s latest attempts to conserve resources and ease environmental pressures. On the other hand, a nationwide campaign should be launched to limit the use of plastic products. Most importantly, the people should be educated to be aware of the harmfulness of using the plastic products to the environment protection.

5. Energy Crisis
One of the main problems the world is facing today is the energy crisis. With the development of industry and agriculture, the world has consumed a great amount of energy. But all this energy has gone forever. Therefore, energy supplies are becoming short, in other words, all forms of energy will be exhausted in future.
However, energy is of great importance to us. We can hardly imagine how we could live in a world without energy. We wouldn’t be able to drive our cars and listen to our favorite music. Moreover, the night would become dark all the time. In short, once we lose all the energy resources, we will not be able to exist in the world.
Therefore, conserving our energy is an important task. We must take active measures to protect our energy resources. On the one hand, we should use our energy reasonably; on the other hand, we should instruct our people not to waste energy so that we will be able to send a good gift-energy to our next generation.

6. Pride Goes Before a Fall
"Pride goes before a fall" is a well-known proverb which all of us are familiar with. I fully agree with it and its implication, in my mind, can be justified in three respects.
First, if you are proud of your success, you may stop working hard and no longer make progress. In this case you will most probably fail the next time. Second, great men in history can always be modest, which, in my mind, is vital to their success. Third, looking at the matter from another perspective, we will find that our achievement is nothing to be proud of when compared to the fantastic dream in our heart we want to realize our life's ultimate goal, we can never stop pursuing.
Living in an age when most people are hardworking, modesty seems more than necessary. As the modem competition becomes more and more fierce, we should realize the importance of modesty. If we can be modest all the time, we can make progress constantly, and life will be more meaningful.

7. Online population
According to the graph, the 18-24 year old age group accounts for the largest percentage of the online population in China while the above sixty age group accounts for the smallest percentage. In general, the graph shows a trend towards a decrease in percentage with the increase in age.
A closer look at the graph would reveal that Internet use is still dominated by younger people. It can be seen that people who are less than forty years old make up more than 88% of the total online population while only less than 12% of Internet users are above forty years old. This may be explained by the fact that the Internet is a relatively new technology and that young people are at an advantage in learning and exploring new things.
Special attention, however, should be given to the fact that the large number of Internet users is those who are under 18 years old. This graph shows that this age group constitutes more than 15% of the online population, the third largest among all age groups. Considering that a large number of people online are children, special measures should be taken to make the Internet safe for this segment of the population.

8. What do you think about the qualities of a good teacher
An ideal teacher is a friend as well as a teacher to his pupils. On one hand, after class an ideal teacher should be pupils’ friend. He likes chatting with students so as to know what they desire. When a student is in trouble, he will comfort him. He also helps to solve any problem that may trouble students.    Moreover, he keeps in constant touch with his students and induces them to study hard and behave well. He always sets a good example himself so as to influence his pupils.
On the other hand, an ideal teacher should be a knowledgeable one. Being an ideal teacher, he should be able to put himself in his students’ place and know what students want to learn. A good teacher should keep up with the latest development in his field and try to make his lecture informative, lively and up-to-date.
Besides, a good teacher should have some necessary qualities of being a teacher. For example, an ideal teacher should be patient and he should be able to express himself clearly and organize his classes well. What’s important is that an ideal teacher should be dedicated to the teaching cause.

9. What do you think about grades?
Grades are really important things for most students. Both school and society evaluate a student just by his or her performance on tests. Students with higher grades are considered as winners. On the other hand, those with lower grades are, unfortunately, looked on as losers. Forced by this expectation, students try as they can to get higher grades no matter what means are adopted. That is one of the main reasons why cheating on tests has become a widespread phenomenon.
In my opinion, a grading system is good for a school, but it is not the only measure of a person’s ability. Schools should set up more selective courses, for instance, to train the students to solve the practical problems. Or they can give more thought to some varieties which can arouse the learning interest instead of just giving grades.

10. Good Manners
Good manners are always highly respected by people all over the world. To a certain degree, good manners indicate a person's good education and breeding. In schools, it is part of students’ moral training to develop good manners. A person with good manners always wins praise. On the contrary, people will frown on him if he behaves roughly and impolitely.
There are good manners in which we behave in public places. It is a good manner to offer help to the young, the old and the handicapped when they are in need of it. And we also need to conduct ourselves politely and keep away from foul language. Besides, we should guard against such minor offences as making a loud noise, casting peels and shells, smoking, and spiting in the public places.
People will form a more harmonious relationship if everyone has developed good manners. Suppose, if everyone behaves considerately towards others and follows the social ethics, people will live in a better world. With the general mood of society being improved, there will be a progress of civilization.

11. Is Hardship a Bad Thing?
1) People have different attitudes toward hardships.
2) Hardship will benefit us in many ways.
3) Hardships are what most of us badly need
People have different attitudes toward hardships. While hardship have been minimized with the fullest possible use of science and technology, some people, especially young people, eagerly seek hardships for their spiritual and bodily health.
Hardship will benefit us in many ways. To begin with, hardships and suffering will help us develop our bodies. To sweet and toil, to wear simple clothes, to live on coarse food, to engage in many exhausting sports, for example, marathons are actually beneficial. Hardship can be an important means to our spiritual development. Having experienced hardships, we will know better how to survive in crisis. Hardships may also help us build up courage, wisdom and self-confidence. What is more, undergoing hardship is an invaluable experience and an indispensable training. If we can bear all kinds of hardships, we will build up the future, which is full of difficulties and dangers as well as challenges and opportunities.
Hardships are what most of us badly need, especially those who grew up in a “greenhouse” and cannot take care of themselves. Life is tough, we must get stronger to meet the challenges and succeed. He who is scared of hardship will accomplish nothing.

12. Our college
Our college is situated in the west of Beijing. Although our campus is not big, all the facilities needed for college study and life are concentrated here.
As you enter the college, you can see the reception office just inside the school gate on the left, and the office for incoming and outgoing mails on the right. If you go along one of the campus passages eastwards, you are greeted by flowerbeds. You will see a bicycle park and a garage on one side, and an office building on the opposite. At the end of the passage there is an apartment building, north of which are two classroom buildings. Two of the students’ dormitories are located in the eastern part of the campus. In the northern part of the campus there are buildings occupied by the general affairs department, the clinic, the bathhouse, and dining halls. Our playground is located in the northwestern corner of the campus. From there another campus passage leads to the college gate. Going down this passage you will see the club on the left and our newly built library on the right. In the centre of our campus there is a flag pole surrounded by flowerbeds. Following this route, you can easily find every place you want to go to on our campus.

13. A brief introduction to our library
Our university boasts a big, well-equipped library. It has a huge collection of books and many modern facilities. It is made up of many sections, including “Cataloguing”, “Periodicals ”, etc. it is accessible to all the students of the university, who can borrow as many as three books at a time and keep them for any length of time up to a fortnight. They have to renew or return the books they have borrowed by the end of this period. Otherwise they would have to be fined as a penalty, or refused permission to borrow any more.
There are a number of rules for behavior in the library. The students are supposed to put back the books to the reference room in their original places on the shelves. They ought to leave the magazines and newspapers in good order and treat the books carefully and keep them in good condition. The students are not allowed to talk in the library or disturb others. They are also supposed to keep quiet when they are passing along outside the library.
Our university library plays an important role in teaching, academic studies and cultivation of talented people.
