overstate [ T ] ( rather formal )
to say sth in a way that makes it seem greater or more important than it really is
He tends to overstate the case when talking politics.
Typical collocates of overstate are importance , significance , seriousness and the case .
OPP understate understate
►  overstatement noun [ C , U ]: It is not an overstatement to say a crisis is imminent. He was well known for his fondness for overstatement.

dramatize ( BrE also -ise ) [ T , I ] ( rather formal )
to make a problem seem more serious or an event or situation more exciting than it really is

to make a story more interesting by adding details that are not always true

to make sth seem more important or impressive than it really is

Typical collocates of inflate in this meaning are importance , significance and value .
