请教高手关于英语句子理解和在阅读中的问题

句子一；few creations of big technology capture the imagination like giant dams .     关键对与“capture the imagination"的理解，
句子二；in the heart of civilized europ ,slovaks and hurgrians stopped just short of sending in the troops in their contention over a dam on the donaube.
句子三；the huge compex will probably have all the usual problems of big dams

还有，我把单词过了几遍了，看阅读时轻松了不少，但是在某些句子理解的时候，不能用直接的意思去理解，看到很熟悉的词，但是用直接的意思就不通顺了：再有一个问题就是把一段的具体意思都能翻译过来，但是不能理解文章的逻辑结构，比如在哪个句子处有转折，递进之类的，唉，求助
