Part I ReadingComprehension (40%)
Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by somequestions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choicesmarked A) , B) , C) and D) . You should decide on the best choice and mark thecorresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.
Passage One
In bringing upchildren, every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition of each newskill, the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning ofreading and writing. It is oftentempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this canset up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. Thismight happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, ayoung child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning ofthe words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone toomuch, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasmfor life and his desire to find out new things for himself.
Parents varygreatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may beespecially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming homeat night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed representthe needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child’sown happiness.
As regards thedevelopment of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is veryimportant in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it thenext is no foundation for morality. Also, parents should realize that “exampleis better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practice what theypreach, their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when theygrow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to someextent fooled.
A suddenawareness of a marked difference between their parents principles and theirmorals can be a dangerous disappointment.

Passage Two
The rise of multinational corporations, global marketing, newcommunications, technologies, and shrinkingcultural differences has led to an unparalleled increase in global publicrelations or PR.
Surprisingly, since modem PR was largely an American invention, the U.S. leadership in public relations is being threatened by PR efforts in other countries.Ten years ago, for example, the world’s top five public relations agencies wereAmerican owned. In 1991, only one was. The British in particular are becomingmore sophisticated and creative. A recent survey found that more than half ofall British companies include PR as part of their corporate planningactivities, compared to about one third of U.S. companies. It may not be longbefore London replaces New York as the capital of PR.
Why is America lagging behind in the global PR race? First, Americans as a whole tend to be fairlyprovincial and take more of an interest in local affairs. Knowledge of worldgeography, for example, has never been strong in this country. Secondly,Americans lag behind their European and Asian counterparts in knowing a secondlanguage. Less than 5 percent of Burson Marshall’s U.S. employees know twolanguages. Ogilvy, and Mather has about the same percentage conversely, someEuropean firms have half or more of their employees fluent in a secondlanguage. Finally, people involved in PR abroad tend to keep a closer eye oninternational affairs. In the financial PR area, for instance, most Americansread the Wall Street Journal. Overseas, their counterparts read the Journal aswell as the Financial Times of London and The Economist. Publications not oftenread in this country.
Perhaps the PRindustry might take a lesson from Ted Turner of CNN (Cable News Network).Turner recently announced that the work “foreign” would no longer be used onCNN news broadcasts. According to Turner, global communications have made thenations of the world so interdependent that there is no longer any such thingas foreign.
6. According to the passage, U.S. leadership in public relation isbeing threatened because ______.
A) allunparalleled increase in the number of public relations companies
B) shrinkingcultural differences and flew communications technologies
C) thedecreasing number of multinational corporations in the U.S.
D) increasedefforts of other countries in public relations
7.London could soon replace New York as the center of PR because ______.
A) Britishcompanies are more ambitious than U. S. companies
B) Britishcompanies place more importance on PR than U. S. companies
C) Britishcompanies are heavily involved in planning activities
D) four of theworld’s top public relations agencies arc British owned
8. The word “provincial” (Line 2, Para. 3)most probably means “______”.
A) limited inoutlook
B) like peoplefrom the provinces
C) rigid inthinking
D) interested inworld financial affairs
9. We learn from the third paragraph thatemployees in the American PR industry ______.
A) speak atleast one foreign language fluently
B) are ignorantabout world geography
C) are not assophisticated as their European counterparts
D) enjoy readinga great variety of English business publications
10. What lesson might the PR industry takefrom Ted Turner of CNN?
A) American PRcompanies should be more internationally minded.
B) The AmericanPR industry should develop global communications technologies.
C) Peopleworking in PR should be more fluent in foreign languages.
D) Peopleinvolved in PR should avoid using the word “foreign”.
6.D 文章第二段第一句话写到“Surprisingly…the U.S. leadership in public relations is beingthreatened by PR efforts in other countries.”
7.B 文章第二段第四句话写到“A recent survey found that more than half of all British companiesinclude PR as part of their corporate planning activities, compares to aboutone third of U.S. companies.”
8.A 文章第三段第二句话写到“Firstly, Americans as a whole tend to be fairly provincial and takemore of an interest in local affairs.”
10.A 文章最后一句话写到“…global communications have made the nations of the world sointerdependent that there is no longer any such thing as foreign.”
Passage Three
Humanity uses alittle less than half the water available worldwide. Yet occurrences ofshortages and droughts are causing famine and distress in some areas, andindustrial and agricultural by-products are polluting water supplies. Since theworld’s population is expected to double in the next 50 years, many expertsthink we are on the edge of a widespread water crisis. But that doesn’t have tobe the outcome. Water Shortage does not have to trouble the world if we startvaluing water more than we did in the past. Just as we began to appreciatepetroleum more after the 1970s oil crisis, today we must start looking at waterfrom a fresh economic perspective. We can no longer afford to consider water avirtually free resource of which we can use as much as we like in any way wewant. Instead, for all uses except the domestic demand of the poor, governmentsshould price water to reflect its actual value. This means charging a fee forthe water itself as well as for the supply costs. Governments should alsoprotect this resource by providing water in more economically andenvironmentally sound ways. For example, often the cheapest way to provideirrigation water in the dry tropics is through small-scale projects such asgathering rainfall in depressions and pumping it to nearby cropland. No matterwhat steps governments take to provide water more efficiently, they must changetheir institutional and legal approaches to water use. Rather than spreadcontrol among hundreds or even thousands of local, regional, and nationalagencies that watch various aspects of water use, countries should set up centralauthorities to coordinate watch policy.
11. What is the real cause of the potentialwater crisis?
A) Only half ofthe world’s water can be used.
B) The worldpopulation is increasing faster and faster
C) Half of theworld's water resources have been seriously polluted
D) Humanity hasnot placed efficient value on water resources.
12. As indicated in the passage, the waterproblem ______.
A) is alreadyserious in certain parts of the world
B) has beenexaggerated by some experts in the field
C) poses achallenge to the technology of building reservoirs
D) isunderestimated by government organizations at different levels
13. According to the author, the waterprice should ______.
A) be reducedto the minimum
B) stimulatedomestic demand
C) correspond toits real value
D) take intoaccount the occurrences of droughts
14. The author says that in some hot anddry areas it is advisable ______.
A) build biglakes to store water
B) constructbig pumping stations
C) build smalland cheap irrigation systems
D) channelwater from nearby rivers to cropland
15. To raise the efficiency of the watersupply, measures should be taken to ______.
A) guaranteefull protection of the environment
B) centralizethe management of water resources
C) increase thesense of responsibility of agencies at all levels
D) encouragelocal and regional on water resources
11.D 文章第五句话写到“Water shortage does not have to trouble the world if we startvaluing water more than we did in the past.”
12.A 文章第二句话写到“Yet occurrences of shortages and droughts are causing famine anddistress in some areas…”
13.C 文章第八句话写到“Instead, for all uses except the domestic demand of the poor, governments should price water to reflect its actual value.”
14.C 文章第十一句话举例说明了政府应如何充分利用水资源,写到“For example, often the cheapest way to provide irrigation water inthe dry tropics is through small-scale projects such as gathering rainfall indepressions and pumping it to nearby cropland.”
15.B 文章最后一句话写到“Rather than spread control among hundreds or even thousands oflocal, regional, and national agencies that watch various aspects of water use, countries should set up central authorities to coordinate watch policy.”
Passage Four
We can see how the product life cycle works by looking at theintroduction of instant coffee. When it wasintroduced, most people did not like it as well as “regular” coffee and it tookseveral years to gain general acceptance (introduction stage). At one point, though, instant coffee grew rapidly in popularity and many brands wereintroduced (stage of rapid growth). After a while people became attached to onebrand and sales leveled off (stage of maturity). Sales went into a slightdecline when freeze-dried coffees were introduced (stage of decline).
The importanceof the product life cycle to marketers is this: Different stages in the productlife cycle call for different strategies. The goal is to extend product life 50that sales and profits do not decline. One strategy is called marketmodification. It means that marketing managers look for new users and marketsections. Second, try toquit using plastic bags. As is known to all, it always takes centuries todecompose those plastic products once they were deserted. Why not go back tothe age of basket and clothing bags? We need a fresher and clearer world otherthan one surrounded by white pollution.
Lastly, take thebus or cycle to work when driving a car is not necessary. Cars are faster buttheir waste gas emission is large, which, will definitely pollute the air alot. Besides, it is a good way to have exercises if you choose to go out bybike or on foot.
