Directions: One of your pen pals will shortly be visiting your city. For some reason, you cannot manage to meet him at the airport on time. Write a letter asking him to wait for you at the airport, and tell him how to identify you.
Dear Earnest,
I am very much looking forward to your visit to my city. Just think: after all these years of writing to each other, we will finally have the chance to meet! However, I regret to inform you that I will not be able to meet you at the airport as soon as you arrive.
The reason is that your flight will arrive early in the morning, and the quickest I can get to the airport will be about an hour after your land. Please wait for me in the arrival lounge.
By the way, as we have never met I must tell you how to recognize me: I am of medium height and have a small mustache. Looking forward to our first meeting.
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming(123)

Directions: Your fiend’s father died a few days ago. Write a letter of consolation to him/her.
Dear Mr. John,
I am exceedingly sorry to hear that your father passed away. The painful news reached us this morning, and we were so shocked that we could not at first realize the fact.
This sad news has put me in full sympathy with you. Your father was an honorable man and tender parent. Everybody who has known him must feel a great loss caused by his death. I quite understand how you feel now, but you are in duty bound to look to your own health and to take care of your family affairs. These would be impossible if you indulge your feeling in grief.
Please accept the deep and true sympathy which is all I can offer.
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming

Dear Sir or Madam,
We have recently received a rather large order for personal computers from a company in your city whose name and address are as follows: China Machinery Import and Export Co., 1, Zhongguancundajie Street, Haidian District, Beijing. They asked us to open a credit account.
As it is entirely a new customer to us, we shall highly appreciate you if you will give us any information regarding its financial standing and business capacity.
It is hardly necessary for us to assure you that whatever information you give us will be treated as strictly confidential. We assure you of our readiness to reciprocate at any time.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Sir or Madam,
Subject: A Claim on 300 Sets of Personal Computers
We have received the 300 sets of Personal Computers ordered by us. But we are so disappointed to find all the cases, without a single exception, have been badly damaged.
The Beijing Commodity Inspection Bureau presented the inspection report that the said cases of computers had been violently shocked and crashed before they were unloaded here.
Now that we totally do not need the consignment, we have no choice but to inform you to return us the invoice value and the inspection charges in the total amount of 320,000 US Dollars. As soon as the claim is settled, we will return the said consignment to you immediately.
Enclosed please find the survey report No (05) 108 issued by the Beijing Commodity Inspection Bureau. We look forward to hearing from your prompt answer.
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming

Directions: You are the president of a company. Write a memo to Percy Shelley, the vice-president on the employee’s training on computer, telling him the need to train the employees, detailed information, and ask him to write a plan.
Date:January 14, 2006
To:Percy Shelley, Vice President
From:Li Ming, President
Subject:Computer Training of the Staff
As we discussed earlier this week, I agree with you that our firm is faced up with problem of the high rate of computer illiteracy of the staff. We need to make up a plan for training our employees in the new field.
I would like you to design our own in-house computer-training program. We had better classify the employees and put them through the program in turn.
Write up a brief proposal, describing what you think the program should cover. Assume the class runs four hours a week for ten weeks. Also, assume people have no prior computer knowledge or any formal course work in computer science. (128)

A third kind of thinking is stimulated when anyone questions our beliefs and opinions. We sometimes find ourselves changing our minds without any resistance or heavy emotion, but if we are told that we are wrong we resent the imputation and harden our hearts. We are incredibly heedless in the information of our beliefs, but find ourselves filled with an illicit passion for them when anyone proposes to rob us of their companionship. It is obvious not the ideas themselves that are dear to us, but our self-esteem, which is threatened. We are by nature stubbornly pledged to defend our own from attack, whether it be our person, our family, our property, or our opinion. We may surrender, but rarely confess ourselves vanquished. In the intellectual world at least, peace is without victory.
Few of us take the pains to study the origin of our cherished convictions; indeed, we have a natural repugnance to so doing. We like to continue to believe what we have been accustomed to accept as true, and the resentment aroused when doubt is cast upon any of our assumptions leads us to seek every manner of excuse for clinging to them. The result is that most of our so-called reasoning consists in finding arguments for going on believing as we already do.
