2006年阅读中的一句话不懂

The fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) says “pathological gambling” involves persistent, recurring and uncontrollable pursuit less of money than of thrill of taking risks in quest of a windfall.大家帮我看看，什么less of money than of...这是什么意思啊，还有为什么有两个of，为什么不可以less money than...

这句话的的意思我倒是看明白了，第一个of应该是紧跟pursuit的介词，第二个of是因为less.... than....中间省略号的部分应该前后有相同的结构，但我想请教一下高手下面这几种说法可不可以，这也是一直困扰我的地方：
1.pursuit of less money than thrill of taking risks in quest of a windfall
2.less pursuit of money than pursuit of thrill of taking risks in quest of a wind fall

==
“pathological gambling” involves pursuit of money.
“pathological gambling” involves pursuit of thrill of taking risks.

加上一个比较级就上面的句子了，其实就是pursuit of 的搭配。

短语的识别能力是考研阅读中的一个难点～

就是这个说法
