The pair of illustrations here presents a striking contrast of the different fate of flowers in and out of the greenhouse, as is demonstrated vividly in the picture. In the first picture, the flower grows and blossoms in the greenhouse. When taken out and exposed to the elements of nature, however, the flower readily withers and dies. The radical change of its fate is truly interesting as well as thought-provoking.
The drawings here are pregnant with twofold interpretations, skin-deep and profound. On the surface level, one may conclude that a flower growing in the greenhouse can never withstand the violent storms outside. Symbolically, the flower actually stands for anything that has lived in a comfortable environment so long that it becomes vulnerable. The storms, on the other hand, can be interpreted as any challenge or adversity that is to be experienced and braved. Anyone who wishes to survive and thrive must learn to cope with changes and challenges in different, and often more hostile, environments.
Accordingly, the set of drawings has its tremendous implications in our life, and particularly in our education. For a long time, the younger generation in China has been accustomed to “greenhouse” of their helicopter parents, and is thus incapable of handling life’s challenges independently. As soon as confronted with challenges of real life, those tender “flowers” readily “wither” and turn out to be failures. It thus becomes imperative, when one considers of the subtle implications of the illustrations here, that the “greenhouse” must be removed so that our “flowers of youth” could learn to grow, survive and even thrive against all odds and challenges of life. After all, it is comfort that kills and it is challenge that enlivens, as Plato, the renowned Greek philosopher, observes. |
