Passage 1
Windstorms have recently established a record which meteorologistshope will not be equaled for many years to come. Disastrous tornadoes alongwith devastating typhoons and hurricanes have cost thousands of lives and left propertydamage totaling far into the millions. The prominence the storms have in thenews has led many people to ask about the difference among the three. Is atyphoon the same as a hurricane? Is a tornado the same as typhoon? Basically, thereis no difference. They all consist of wind rotating counterclockwise (in theNorthern Hemisphere) at a tremendous velocity around a low-pressure center. However, each type does have its own definite characteristics. Of the three thetornado is certainly the most treacherous. The Weather Bureau can, with somedegree of accuracy, forecast the typhoon and the hurricane; however, it isimpossible to determine where or when the tornado will strike. And out of thethree, if one; had a choice, perhaps it would be safer to choose to withstand thehurricane.

III. Readthe passages below and choose the best answer to each question from the fourchoices given. (20%)
Passage 1
2.A 文章提到,“The Weather Bureau can, withsome degree of accuracy, forecast the typhoon and the hurricane; however, it isimpossible to determine where or when the tornado will strike.”
3.B 根据文章最后一句“And out of the three, ifone; had a choice, perhaps it would be safer to choose to withstand thehurricane.”
4.C 文中提到“Windstorms have recentlyestablished a record which meteorologists hope will not be equaled for manyyears to come.”
A项可从文中“Of the three the tornado iscertainly the most treacherous”看出;B项:“it isimpossible to determine where or when the tornado will strike”;C项:“They all consist of wind rotating counterclockwise”。

4.D 从文中 “learning by doing”以及“His belief that teachers shouldteach the child, not the subject…”,我们不难看出,杜威推崇的是教育应该“做中学”,而不仅仅只是教师传授理论知识。
5.A 从文章最后一段第一句“A slay, retiring manknown to his own Columbia University students as a dull lecturer”可以看出学生对他的评价。
IV. Foreach blank in the following passage, choose the best answer from the choicesgiven below. (20%)

5.A “whatother people already know and accept”
6.B “way ofdoing sth.”
8.C “between…and…”
9.B 此处承接了上文的“if only young people aregiven this kind of education”。

12.B “educationfor development must be for people of all ages”与前一段第一句对应。by all means用尽一切办法。to a great extent in some cases在某些情况下。
16.Aprogress in…
