【听力原文】
We are hearing a lot these days about downshifting, so what is it? Theterm downshifting first appeared in 1994.It was coined by the Trans-researchInstitute to describe a new philosophy by which higher achievers at work chosea lower salary in exchange for a better quality of life. According to a recentstudy, 4 out of 10 people under 35 years old are planning to downshift fromstressful jobs to a slower pace of life. It is not just the dream of the young;it is also popular with 35 to 54-year old, 12% of whom are making plans todownshift, 16% hoping to down so in next 2 years.
The study found that, 7% of workers had already downshifted. Doctor LucyGrand, a psychologist looking at the phenomenon, believes that the downshiftingis a dream that more and more people want to turn into a reality. People arenot satisfied with their lives, and they want to make changes. However DoctorGrand adds, that some people will hesitate, because they don’t actually believethey can make it happen, while others will rush into downshifting to discoverthat their dream ends up with the financial crisis. So it’s something thatrequires a lot of thought and planning to get right.
Questions:
14. According to the passage, what is downshifting?
15. According to a recentstudy, what is the percentage of workers who have already downshifted?
16. In Lucy Grand’s opinion, why does downshifting require a lot of thought and planning?

Look to many of history’s cultural symbols, and there you’ll find anancestor of Frosty, the snowman in the movie Frozen. It appeared on some of thefirst postcards, starred in some of the earliest silent movies, and was thesubject of a couple of the earliest photos, dating all the way back to the1800s. I discovered even more about one of humanity’s earliest forms of lifeart during several years of research around the world.
For example, snowmen were a phenomenon in the Middle Ages, built withgreat skill and thought. At a time of limited means of expression, snow waslike free art supplies dropped from the sky. It was a popular activity forcouples to leisurely walk through town to view the temporary works of chilly art. Somewere created by famous artists, including a 19-year-old Michelangelo, who in1494 was appointed by the ruler of Florence, Italy, to build a snowman in hismansion’s courtyard.
The Miracle of1511 took place during six freezing works called the Winter of Death. The cityof Brussels was covered in snowmen—an impressive scene that told stories onevery street corner. Some were political in nature, criticizing the church andgovernment. Some were a reflection of people’s imagination. For the people ofBrussels, this was a defining moment of defining freedom. At least until springarrived, by which time they were dealing with damaging floods.
If you fear theheyday of the snowman has passed, don’t worry: I’ve learned that some explosivesnowman history is still being made today. Every year since 1818, the people ofZurich, Switzerland, celebrate the beginning of spring by blowing up a snowman. On the third Monday of April, the holiday Sechselauten is kicked off when acotton snowman called the Boogg is stuffed with explosive and paraded throughtown by bakers and other tradesmen who throw bread to the crowds. The paradeends with the Boogg being placed on a 40-foot pile of firewood. After the bellsof the Church of St. Peter have rung six times, representing the passing ofwinter, the pile is lit. When the snowman explodes, winter is consideredofficially over—the quicker it is burnt down, the longer summer is said to be.(392)

  Scary Bunny
The Curse of the  Were-Rabbit(2005) is the first fulllength feature film made by  directors Nick Park and Steve Box with their amazing plasticine (粘土) characters Wallace and Gromit. It won an  Oscar in 2006, and if you watch it, you’ll understand why. It’s an absolutely  brilliant cartoon comedy.

Cheese-loving inventor  Wallace and his brainy dog Gromit have started a company to protect the  town’s vegetables from hungry rabbits. However, just before the annual Giant  Vegetable Competition, an enormous rabbit begins terrorizing the town. It is  attacking all the vegetables and destroying everything in its path. The  competition organizer, Lady Tottington, hires Wallace and Gromit to catch the  monster alive. But they will have to find the were-rabbit before gun-crazy  hunter Victor Quartermaine who is desperate to kill it.

The screenplay is witty and  full of amusing visual jokes. As usual, the voice of Peter Sallis is  absolutely perfect for the role of Wallace, and Gromit is so beautifully  brought to life, he can express a huge range of emotions without saying a  word. And both Helena Bonham-Carter, who plays the part of Lady Tottington,  and Ralph Fiennes as Victor are really funny.

To sum up, The Curse of the  Were-Rabbit is an amazing film which is suitable for both children and  adults. If you liked Wallace and Gromit’s previous adventures and you  appreciate the British sense of humour, you’ll love this film. Don’t miss it!

One of the executives gathered at the Aspen Institute for a day-longleadership workshop using the works of Shakespeare was discussing the role ofBrutus in the death of Julius Caesar. “Brutus was not an honorable man,” hesaid. “He was a traitor(叛徒). Many of theparticipants pointed to very specific elements in the play that they feltrelated Caesar’s pride, which led to his murder, and Brutus’s mistakes inleading the after the murder, theysaid, raise vital questions for anyone serving as a business when and how doyou resist the boss? (481)

Youth sport has the potential to accomplish three important objectives inchildren’s development. First, sport programs can provide youth withopportunities to be physically active, which can lead to improved physicalhealth. Second, youth sport programs have long been considered important toyouth’s psycho-social development, providing opportunities to learn importantlife skills such as cooperation, discipline, leadership, and self-control.Third, youth sport programs are critical for the learning of motor skills;these motor skills serve as a foundation for future national sport stars andrecreational adult sport participants. When coachers develop activities foryouth practices and when sport organizations design youth-sport programs, theymust consider the implication of deliberate play and deliberate practice.
Research from Telama (2006) states that regular participation indeliberate play or deliberate practice activities during childhood and youth(ages nine to eighteen) increases the likelihood of participation in sportsduring adulthood by six times for both males and females. C?té (2002) definesdeliberate play activities in sport as those designed to maximize enjoyment. These activities are regulated by flexible rules adapted from standardizedsport rules and are set up by the children or by an involved adult. Childrentypically change rules to find a point where their game is similar to theactual sport but still allows for play at their level. For example, childrenmay change soccer and basketball rules to suit their needs and environment(e.g. in the street. on a playing field or in someone’s backyard). Wheninvolved in deliberate play activities, children are less concerned with theoutcome of their outcome of their behavior (whether they win or lose) than withthe behavior (having fun).
On the other hand, Ericsson (1993) suggests that the most effectivelearning occurs through involvement in highly structured activities defined asdeliberate practice. Deliberate practice activities require effort, produce noimmediate rewards, and are motivated by the goal of improving performancerather than the goal of enjoyment. When individuals are involved in deliberateplay, they experiment with different combinations of behaviors, but notnecessarily in the most effective way to improve performance. In contrast, whenindividuals are involved in deliberate practice, they exhibit behavior focusedon improving performance by the most effective means available. For example, the backhand skills in tennis could be learned and improved over time byplaying matches or by creating fun practice situations. However, players couldmore effectively improve their backhand performance by practicing drills thatmight be considered less enjoyable. Although drills are used in most effectivemeans available practice might not be the most enjoyable, they might be themost relevant to improving performance. (439)

Dear Sir/ Madam,
Since the Reading Festival is around the corner, I’m writing to recommenda picture which can be used in the brochure to remind the students of thepleasure of reading.
In the picture, three students are sitting at the table, discussingheatedly what they have just read. It seems that they have had so much funthrough the discussion that even an onlooker will be excited to join in. Thereis no doubt that reading is mostly a personal activity which needs quietnessand concentration, but as far as I’m concerned, it can also be a sharingexperience from which our comprehension about the book will be greatly enhanced.Just imagine that you have read a terrific detective story with fascinating andintricate plots. You are so amazed by the genius of the writer and you can’thelp sharing it with your classmates or best friends, who turn out to have beendeeply impressed as well. The moment you mention the book, the passion andenthusiasm about the story will explode which can never be gained on your own.My ideal atmosphere of reading is just like that, through which you can notonly appreciate the content by yourself, but also have the pleasure of sharingthe plots or opinions with your peers, which will ultimately enhance yourunderstanding of the book. So it will be great benefits for people who don’tlike reading very much. Only by joining this kind of reading discussion can wediscover another world behind the books, and we will be very thrilled when itwas unfolded before you. To sum up, the reason of my recommendation is quitesimple and apparent that reading, instead of being dull and isolating, can befull of participation and common interest. I sincerely hope that you will takemy suggestion into consideration and I’m looking forward to your early reply.
Yours sincerely,
Pan Yang
