An example that comes to mind is SARS crisis that has recently torn apart and ravaged most of China. Admittedly, it has cost us quite a lot. The picture symbolically depicts how some people who call themselves “scholars” are doing their research. Instead of writing their own research papers, they resort to copying each other’s works. Looking at the picture, we cannot but worry about the problem of intellectual honesty—an issue vital to the healthy development of our science and technology cause.
Suppose that every scientist or researcher does not do experiments, but plagiarize others’ research results, then what would happen? There would be no intellectual honesty and people would no longer believe what the scientists say. Since scientists are noble elites of society, if their words are incredible, then the credibility of the whole society would deteriorate and collapse.
Therefore, intellectual credibility is not something that we can afford to lose or leave it at large. We each individual should start from right here and now, and attach great value and importance to the urgency of the issue. It is time that drastic measures were taken by the authorities to change the situation.

The dressy lady is also with his son, a boy, high-flying, fashionably-dressed, apparently from a well-to-do family. The picture is heart-rending-- a dramatic view of the widening gap between rich and poor in our nation.
Although a lot of efforts have been put into bridging the gap, the situation is far from optimistic. Take the uneven development of our nation for example. On one side of the picture, some people in the developed areas of country are enjoying almost everything that modern civilization can offer---- luxury cars, expensive houses and other devices for comfortable life. The other side of the picture is that in some underdeveloped areas, a lot of people are still living in sheer poverty. They do not have the minimal means of living, even no money for the education of the young. Looking at all these, how can we stay aloof and easy?
Our nation is building up a harmonious society. If we don’t do something to harmonize the situation by achieving common welfare for all the people, how can we accomplish that noble goal? As a famous man put it, “If we can not help the many who are poor, then we can not save the few who are rich.” Effective measures need to be taken to help the poor so that we can work towards a harmonious nation where the rich is just and the poor secure.

This is not an uncommon picture in our life: there are many occasions in which so many people don’t abide by the rules. What picture above intends to convey is a typical example. They make troubles and create chaos, causing damages to the public property, as we see it----the bus door already turned loose.

The picture describes a prevailing phenomenon—young teens’ addiction to net-surfing. We can see that in the picture the young boy is totally absorbed in what is in the net to the exclusion of all the other things. Judging from his weary face, we can infer he must have been on line for a long time. Looking at this, we can not help feeling rather discouraged and concerned.
Admittedly, internet provides us with inｆｒｏｍation, convenience and sometimes excitements if we can put it into proper uses. And people have accomplished a lot with the help of this modern invention. However, as every coin has two sides, so does internet. Depending on how we use it, it can be both beneficial and detrimental. If we fail to make appropriate use of it, troubles will occur. This is a pathetic and heart-rending scene! In the picture given, a bird, cold and hungry, is squatting on a branch of a lonely tree, overlooking the desolation of trunks left after trees were cut down. The bird seems to be asking herself, “Where is my homeland?” No one can look at this picture without helping thinking. Who has deprived the bird of her right to have a home?
Of course, we humans are to blame. We are so development-oriented that we almost can sacrifice whatever natural resources in order to obtain a little material gain. It so happens that we cut trees to clear land for farming and level up a lake to build houses. The result of so doing and other destructive developments is deforestation and uncontrollable desertification, thus driving the wild animals homeless like the scene we see above. This mode of progress is no doubt short-sighted and detrimental in the long run.
Some of the harsh lessons we need to learn: first, we should respect the nature and other animals’ rights to survive. Second, we must waste no natural resources and possibly develop alternative ｆｒｏｍs of energy to replace the decreasing natural resources. Some people are not fully aware of the importance of wild life protection and hunt and eat wild animals and cause more and more species to be near the brink of distinction. And effect of so doing is appalling and deadly. Thus, we sometimes hear such a story. In a certain area, villagers captured all the wild woofs for their fur and meat. Where there is sunshine, there is shadow.
There has been a discussion recently in the newspaper about a picture——a young tree growing well, yet with a long shadow under it, in the warm sunshine. Simply designed, as it is, the symbolic meaning the picture conveys is profound and thought-provoking. Just as the picture shows, where there is sunlight, there is shadow.
A specific example is the economic development and the environmental problem. Developing at a high speed, Chinese economy really admitted much sunshine to the welfare of our nation and the livelihood of the people. However, it also casts its shadow on our road——it has much negative effect on the natural environment. Therefore, we are heading for a variety of human environmental disasters if nothing is done to change the course.
As for the best way to get rid of the shadow of the environmental disasters, the picture, I think, can give us a big hand. The saying “No pains, no gains” is almost universally accepted because of the plain yet philosophical moral it teaches: if one wants to achieve something, he has to work harder and tolerate more than others. The saying is true of any pursuit man seeks. Whatever one wishes to accomplish, he has to exert himself to forge ahead, for nobody can expect anything for nothing.
A case in point is boxing. While we heap cheers on the winner, how many happen to realize that his gold belt is won at the cost of his sweat, tears, blood over years and sometimes even at threat of his life before the arrival of that exciting moment? Whatever worthy we do, wherever we are, we should bear in mind: never expect anything for nothing. Success does not bother to visit the one who does not, bit by bit, prepare for it.
