Perhaps partly because the experience of certain arts—music, for example—is so unaccountable to language, it has been acceptable, for much of history, for the scholar or fan to discuss not only about the technical details of a work of art or its effect on its audience, but also details relating to the life of the artist, or the intentions of the artist.
Many will argue that such biographical details help to attract an unfamiliar audience to something of cultural importance. Some, moreover, will contend that knowledge of the artist’s life and intentions are necessary to a real understanding of their work.
I emphatically oppose both such arguments.
Art may require some degree of translation. Its cultural and historical context may need to be untangled somewhat for an uninitiated audience.

Perfectly groomed and outfitted, each student hungrily vied for a consultant’s attention.
The job market was no candy land. I was up against peers with better GPAs and even better resumes.

Life was not easy for an unknown painter. The struggle began to show in a new choice of subjects. For several years he pained people from the poorer parts of the city. He painted men and women who were thin, hungry, tired, sick and blind. His colours got darker. Most of these pictures were painted in shades of blue and showed very clearly what the artist saw and felt. The paintings of this “blue period” are full of pity and despair.
As he began to sell his pictures and to become recognized as a painter, his pictures took on a warmer look.

Vincent van gogh—an impressionist
His first recognized works were set in Borinage and reflected the rural culture in which he was living and his belief(理念) in order and symmetry in both society and art. The period resulted in what became known as the Brabant canvases.
Between 1883 and 1886, at Noord Brahant again, his painting developed into characteristic dark landscapes and scenes of country life. He stressed character and expression(性格表现) rather than perspective and physical accuracy.
In1886 Van Gogh left Holland forever and traveled to Paris, and to major changes in artistic style. Van Gogh’s work became more youthful in Paris. He lived with his brother, Theo, who managed the modern department of an art dealer’s. a new, more animated, painting style emerged and the impressionist tendencies of earlier work weakened somewhat. |
