分析：凤姐在贾母面前称赞林黛玉，又说她不像贾母的外孙女，而像亲孙女，是在借黛玉恭维贾母。文中的"外"与"亲"字很关键。译文1中的"your side"讲的虽然也是真话，却并不中听，肯定不讨贾母的欢喜，也不是凤姐的用意。译文2用"her father"替代了贾母，既澄清了"外孙女"所含的语义关系，又达到了原文语用的目的。

原文中的“鸡犬相闻”用意在于表现乡村里平安祥和的生活气氛。如果照字面直译就成了“鸡鸣狗叫”，在不同文化背景的英美人心目中是十分令人不快的景象。为了避免产生这种意外的负面效应，奈达博士改译进加上了"friendly"一词。
