【英文翻译的基本方法和技巧之七】

分译法 ：英语中有的句子很长，为了符合汉语表达习惯，我们常常把英语长句拆开来翻译，成为若干短句。这样做既准确表达出原意，又使译文通顺流畅，这种翻译法就是分译法。
  
例一： How well the predictions will be validated by later performance depends upon the amount ,reliability ,and appropriateness of the information used and on the skill and wisdom with which it is interpreted.
分析： How … performance 是主语从句，主语谓语是 depends , 译文采用分译法：把主语从句作为独立句子来处理，在主句谓语前加“这”，概括了主语从句的含义。此外， with which … interpreted 是定语从句，其中 it 指 information, 该定语从句修饰 the skill and wisdom, 译文采用合译法。可见，无论是分译法或合译法都是为了确切地表达原意，使译文符合汉语的表达习惯。

译文： 这些猜测在多大程度上为后来的表现所证实，这取决于所采用信息的数量、可靠性和适宜性，以及解释这些信息的技能和才智。
  
例二： As the century developed, the increasing magnitude and complexity of the problems to be solved and the growing interconnection of different disciplines made it impossible, in many cases, for the individual scientist to deal with the huge mass of new data ,techniques and equipment that were required for carrying out research accurately and efficiently.
分析 ： As 引导的是时间状语从句。主句的主语是 the increasing magnitude and complexity of the problems to be solved and the growing interconnection of different disciplines 。在这两个结构复杂的主语中，第一个主语的主导词是 magnitude and complexity ，现在分词 increasing 修饰它们，从逻辑上看，被逻辑词与修饰词是主谓关系。第二个主语中的主导词是 interconnection, 现在分词 growing 修饰它，从逻辑上看，它们之间也是主谓关系。所以，在翻译处理时，把两个结构复杂的主语各译成汉语的单句，然后在主句谓语前加上“这一切”，使译文简洁明了。

译文 ：随着本世纪时间的流逝，欲待解决的问题与日俱增，其复杂程度日益深化，而且不同学科之间的相互联系日益密切。这一切在许多情况下使单个科学家无法处理那些进行精确而高效的研究工作所需要的大量新数据、新技术和新设备。
  
从中可以看出，英语中的长句，一般指主从复合句和并列复合句。在翻译过程中，必须抓住全句的中心内容，搞清楚句子各部分之间的语法关系及由此体现出来的联系。长句的分译法就是以上述的认真分析为基础。我们在练习和应试时，应从英语上下文的内在联系，辨清外延和内涵，过度到深层理解。
